I want to share with you a new fashion brand, SR By Sonali Raman. We heard from them over the summer and their boho-eclectic collection of jewelry and fashion is sure to appeal to you. Sonali has been a fashion designer and consultant for 25 years and is based out of Doha, Qatar and last November, she started her own brand, SR by Sonali Raman, with a line of fashion jewelry. Indian zardozi artisans hand-embroider the designs on leather. The leather is sourced ethically and every piece is painstakingly handcrafted. According to Sonali, this “gives the zardozi craft tradition a new form of life and the idea is to keep working with different crafts and textiles and create contemporary and sustainable jewelry and clothing. I have also launched a small line of 100% silk tops for women, and the styles and silhouettes are all inspired by traditional men’s clothing in India. Subtle hand-embroidery embellishes these silk blouses.”
Based on traditional symbols drawn from Sonali’s home (India) and the region where she now lives (Middle East), each pair of earrings is a pure work of handcrafted art: intricate hand embroidery and shimmering crystals sit on a cushion of soft gold-tinted ethically sourced leather. There are a number of designs such as the Mor (peacock), the Hamza (pictured above, and representing the Arabic talisman of good luck) among others. There are also long necklaces, chokers and bracelets. SR by Sonali Raman is available through pop-up events, markets and a few stores – like Chamiers in Chennai, and boutiques in Singapore and Doha. They also hosted an event on online market Jaypore. You can see the collection (and get in touch with Sonali) on their Facebook page.
