Once Upon A Tea Time

We now come to the final part of this mini series of posts  on what the phrase ‘a woman of substance’ means to different people. This final section is special because I feel it caps the series perfectly + is a great way to start the week. Meera D’Souza is a friend and a long-time OUATT reader and supporter, and I asked her to share what the phrase ‘a woman of substance’ meant to her.

” When I think of that phrase what comes to mind is a woman who knows her strengths and acknowledges her accomplishments. She is aware of her imperfections, but does not berate herself about them. She accepts that vulnerability is a strength. It allows her to reach out and find those that are good at what she may struggle with and together, they can achieve greater things. She stands up for her values even when she must stand alone. She enjoys the privilege of the roles that are for “women”- be it a daughter, sister, wife, mother, teacher or friend. She knows she cannot do them all well, but she always gives it her best shot. These roles alone don’t define her completely. She has carved out a niche for herself- through her qualities and talents. She is interesting to get to know. Probably what sums it up for me is the true test of substance and so well said by Oriah Mountain Dreamer: “I want to know if you can be alone with yourself and if you truly like
the company you keep in the empty moments “.

The poem is The Invitation by Oriah and you can read the entire poem here and believe me, the words will haunt you for a long time. Have a fantastic week and if you’d like to send in your thoughts, I would love to hear from you.
