“Hello! House tour alert! My name is Priya and I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. I have shared a lot of stories over the years on this blog, but today I thought I’d share with you a small tour of my family’s home. We, my husband and I, and our 2 teenage boys, moved to this house 3 years ago. We moved because our work and school commutes were too long, and it felt like we were spending more time driving in the car, than at home together. It was a spur of the moment decision, and we decided to move even though it was an off-season for house buying etc. etc.
I fell in love with this house because it reminded me of my parents’ home in southern India- gracious, tall rooms, lots of creamy marble, windows letting in the warm, golden sunshine, and even pillars like wedding halls have in the South!
Most of all, the house reminded both my husband and I of summer vacations spent in southern India- both of us are from southern India, but grew up elsewhere. It reminded us of tea times, of joyful conversations, and the laughter of children at play- an older, slower, and more gracious way of living. A place where there was always time to smell the roses.
We moved in and made it our own. I wish I could say I decorate in a ‘this’ or ‘that’ particular style, but the truth is I just surround us with the things we love- art, books and textiles. The art on the walls is a mix of everything, from postcards, to posters, textiles and original art pieces. We are always at library book sales, and it’s fair to say that we can never say ‘no’ to another book. So, a little boho, reflective of our Indian roots, and mixed in with all the places we have ever lived in. A visual story of our lives. Stay tuned for part 2 featuring the one room, that I always laughingly say, clinched the deal on why we had to move here!” – Priya
