Treasure Island Flea /Collectivitea

The sun glinting off the grey-green waters of the San Francisco Bay, and blue skies stretching endlessly – that’s the backdrop of the Treasure Island Flea!  It’s held on the last weekend of every month on Treasure Island in the SF Bay. I love going to this market!  They feature an array of vendors who offer everything from vintage clothing to beautifully etched driftwood, furniture, puppets and dolls, creatively repurposed and recycled items as well as handmade candles and soaps. There are the usual suspects that one finds at a flea market- books, records and bric-a-brac of every kind. I am drawn to flea markets for many reasons. For one, it’s a great way to spend the day- shopping, food trucks, and live music! Plus the Treasure Island’s location and views can’t be beat! But there is also a nostalgia that I associate with all yard sales and flea markets. Objects from different parts of the world have made their way here, changing owners, countries and continents and sometimes, changed themselves beyond recognition. The next part of their journey may bring them home with me or someone else and that appeals to the romantic in me. A suzani that was embroidered patiently by a group of Uzbeki or Turkish women and was once part of someone’s dowry has made it’s way to San Francisco, and is looking to make a new home. A mask from Mexico, a Tibetan cabinet, driftwood washed onto local beaches that have been given a new lease on life or a box of books that were once part of a treasured collection – we can imagine stories for each one of them. Come, walk through the market with me and remember, we are not here to just shop for objects- we are collecting stories to add to our own.  Enjoy!- Priya
