My dear internet family, I am so happy to be on Day 17 of the 21 Day Gratitude Challenge. I initially wondered if I could show up, write every day, and do justice to the prompts. As I go deeper into my gratitude practice, I have noticed a subtle shift in my attitudes and perception of daily events. As soon as I start waking up in the morning, my mind starts to list all the basic necessities that I am grateful for every day- shelter, a roof over my head, the warmth of the bed, running water, breakfast. The opportunity to face another day. This is a shift from when I would start my morning mentally listing all the things I had to get done that day. I’d feel overwhelmed before I got my cup of tea. Now, all those things are still there waiting for me to get to them, but I start the day with a feeling of more calm and the awareness of all that I already have, a feeling of abundance and not anxiety. And that is a welcome shift.
Day 17’s prompt asks you to be grateful for the present moment. The past is done, the future unknown. All you have is this moment and how you choose to spend it is totally up to you. Be grateful for it. In Eckhart Tolle’s words, “Whatever the present moment contains, accept it as if you had chosen it.”
