January New Moon (365 Creative Exercises & Prompts, Day 77)

It's Time For Cake /Day 34/ 365-Day Creativity Challenge/ Collectivitea

Day 77 of the 365 Day Creative Exercises. Today/ tomorrow (Jan 16 and 17th) is the first new moon of 2018, and as with all new moons, great for intention and goal setting. If you’d like, you can create a vision board, a pictorial representation of your short-term or long-term goals. Create one or both. (Click on the above link for posts on how to create a vision board.) If you already have a vision board and are looking for another creative prompt for Day 77 (sorry, I’d gotten the last few days muddled up but figured it out today), please interpret as art what the new moon means to you. What are your thoughts? Do you feel in sync with nature’s cycles? What comes to mind when you think of the new moon? You may draw a picture or create a collage of what this January new moon feels like to you and what you’d like to focus on at this time.

January New Moon Creative Exercise/ CollectiviteaWhen I think of the new moon, I always (hopefully, rightly) think of dark nights and twinkling stars. All my life, I have lived only in coastal cities, albeit in different countries, and I feel deeply connected to seas and oceans. Standing at the seaside on full moon nights, it’s easy to believe in magic, so beautiful and surreal is the setting. But when you stand on the beach on a warm, dark night, it’s as if many oceans meet, the sky, the sand, and the water, creating a mystical bubble. It can remove distraction and nudge you to look within yourself for answers, as if by turning off the moon, the light within is more visible.  My family lived in the Persian Gulf region from the time I was 9, and our backyard was literally the Arabian Sea. The section of the beach behind our house was private and you could go for a walk on warm nights and feel like you were swaddled in a comforting blanket of darkness. I can’t think of the new moon without immediately thinking of the softness of the sand, the hushing of the sea, and the blackness of the sky pierced by the occasional lights from a distant ship. Happy new moon visualizing and creatively expressing yourself!  Have a wonderful day and I’ll see you tomorrow!- Priya

Background: Welcome! We are now at Day 77 of the 365-Day Creativity Challenge, and I am excited and happy to have you here!  I use the terms ‘creative’, ‘creativity’  or ‘creative exercise’ very loosely. While they have very specific meanings within the art or business worlds, I define it as any activity that allows us to access an inner stillness. Where the mind’s incessant chatter decreases, and for that short period of time, we are in the presence of a magnificent quietude. Where we feel joyful and recharged as if accessing a powerful, bountiful source of imagination and ideas. It makes what we do- draw, write, paint, work in a science lab, dance, sing, play music, photography etc. etc.- a spiritual experience. It has nothing to do with talent and skill level, and everything to do with joy. Whether you take part in all 365 days, or 7, 21, or 30 days, or join us when you can, I hope you will take the time to relax, slow down, and be your joyous self! Want more details? You may want to read this introduction to the 365-Day Creativity Challenge. Have a wonderful day! Just as a reminder, it really helps to have a dedicated journal or notebook because you will see  a continuous record of your creativity expanding and changing as you devote time to it every day. You will also be creating a year’s worth of creative work. As you work through the prompts, write down other things that strike you because you may want to revisit these ideas. Have a wonderful day and I will see you tomorrow! To share what you are doing, please use the hashtag #ctea365 on social media and /or leave me a comment below. – Priya
