7 spiritual books for the beginning seeker. 7 self-help books for everyone. 7 self-improvement books for the spiritual path. I thought of many titles for this post before settling on the current one- 7 Must-Read Books On Spirituality For Beginners. Let me tell you why I’m writing this post. One, right or wrong, I have always looked to books for answers on everything. Two, a few years ago, I came to a point in my life where I felt lost. I had a life situation that I wanted and had worked for, but on arriving at it, I wasn’t happy. I was still looking for something though I’d no idea what it was. Seeking and looking for answers became a way of life, and I went through almost every self-help book there was. I read a variety of authors, listened to many voices, and I kept on reading. I would hardly finish one book and feel like I was more aware, before I would be tempted by another book. Maybe this one will help me figure everything out? This went on for nearly 1.5 years, a constant seeking that never seemed to be satisfied for long. At about this time, I also started regular meditation, a simple 15-20 minute guided practice. I don’t know when, how, or why, but at some point, I seem to have stopped looking for answers. The shift seems to have happened without my noticing. I am not a teacher but it’s my opinion that meditation is responsible for that shift from searching to, more and more, just being. That said, there were books and teachers that served as very essential guideposts along the path and I wanted to share them here. I hope you enjoy reading these. Some of the writings may really resonate with you and others, not so much. The list has very diverse writers and voices and you may not agree with all that they say. Take what speaks to you and leave the rest.
1 and 2) Eckhart Tolle’s The Power of Now : A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment and A New Earth: Awakening to your Life’s purpose – these two are actually a complete life guide and you probably don’t need any other book. Ever. But if you are looking for more…3, 4 and 5) are books that talk about spirituality (in some cases, indirectly) in the context of contemporary life, its challenges, and how to grow through them. The Universe Has Your Back by Gabrielle Bernstein, You Are A Badass by Jen Sincero, and The Subtle Art Of Not Giving A F*ck by Mark Manson; 6) Love Warrior by Glennon Doyle; 7) Dr. Wayne Dyer’s 10 Secrets For Success And Inner Peace. Enjoy your reading and let me know if you have other recommendations. Best, Priya
